On Bioengineering and Zombies

This is an article about humans using a type of parasitic fly to turn fire ants into “zombies.”

Flies to Zombies

I’m not a big fan of using animals to control other animals especially when we don’t know what the possible side effects are.  Also, the whole environmental changes that occur when you introduce new invasive species is not something for which to trifle.  I’m not reassured by the claims that the flies only attack certain species of fire ant either.  What would happen if they began burrowing into the heads of other ants?  Ants are important in many ways in the natural world, not to mention the benefit we humans gain from ants, that of pollination.

Not too sure I like this story.  I’ll keep an eye on it.
