On Corruption

Corruption is the worse crime a politician can do.  It is right up there with Abuse of Power in things that drive me crazy.

As you have all heard by now the Illinois Governor Blagojevich was arrested on charges of corruption today as he is accused of selling the open Senate seat of President Elect Obama.

Blagojevich was quoted as saying that he had to “get” something for the Senate Seat appointment.  He was not going to give it away for free.  He also was quoted saying that he was “stuck” as a governor.

Firstly shame on him for his selling off of his principles for something as insignificant as money.  If he is guilty he should have the book thrown at him.  We cannot abide corruption in any way shape or form in our government.  We need to root it out.  This of course also relates to so called “soft money” that we need to really reevaluate but that is another post.

Secondly, when did being Governor of a very important state such as Illinois become a job that you are “stuck” in?  I think that many governors are reacting to the fact that for the first time in nearly 50 years a Senator was elected President.  I think they have forgotten that that most of the time we elect Governors.

The last Senator elected President was Kennedy by the way.  Since then we have elected Governors or Vice Presidents.  I think that Governors are all itching for the National exposure of a Senator even though the office of a Governor is an enviable position where you are the decision maker instead of one part in a group of 100.

Just look at how Palin kept her options open for the Senate if Senator Stevens was reelected and then forced to resign.  Now we have the story of the Illinois Governor also keeping the option of appointing himself as well.

This is a blow as it just happens to be the Governor of President Elect Obama, but it is good that this story has broken.  We need to remind the politicians that they work for us not the other way around.  The rule of law needs to be maintained and we need to be constantly vigilant.
