Offshore drilling is McCain’s new slogan. He is repeatedly yelling and screaming about how we need to drill drill drill when the fact of the matter is that drilling would not impact our economy for years. As in 10-20 years according to the Department of Energy.
The truth of the matter is that even if offshore drilling occurred in new areas (the oil companies have literally thousands of acres that they can legally tap and they are not) the new oil would not even be guaranteed to go to the United States.
If any type of offshore drilling occurs (again in the thousands of acres Oil Companies already legally have the license for) perhaps there should be an incentive to sell that oil here in the states. Perhaps a tax credit or some other form of legal incentive to help relieve our imports of oil from the Middle East.
Of course all this is irrelevant when one sees how much oil we actually import from Canada and Mexico in comparison with the Middle East. Another fact that the fear mongering Drillers love to ignore.
The fact of the matter is we do need to lessen our reliance on oil for numerous reasons not just “foreign policy” reasons.
